Crypto Security Basics: Protect Your Keys and Seed Phrase
Bottom line: whoever holds the keys, holds the assets
In crypto there's a saying: "Not your keys, not your coins." Whoever controls the private key (and its backup, the seed phrase) controls the assets. So key management is the whole game.
The absolute rule
Never tell anyone your seed phrase, never type it into a website, never screenshot it. Legitimate services never ask for it. If asked, assume it's a scam.
Private key vs. seed phrase
- Private key — the key that moves your assets
- Seed phrase — 12–24 words that can restore your wallet and all keys (a master key)
If your seed phrase leaks, all your assets can be stolen.
How to store it safely
- Keep it offline (written down, in a safe place)
- Never store it in photos, cloud or notes apps
- Use a hardware wallet for larger amounts
- Keep backups against fire/loss
Common attacks
| Attack | How | Defense |
|---|---|---|
| Phishing | Fake site asks for your key | Check URLs; use bookmarks |
| Fake support | "Support" asks for your phrase | Real support never does |
| Fake apps | Malicious wallet steals keys | Official stores/links only |
